Our story
Who we are
Our food system is broken. Huge corporate-owned farms are running family farmers out of business; unsustainable agriculture practices are contributing to climate change and environmental degradation; our food options are becoming increasingly unhealthy and nutritionally deficient. From abused farm workers to Styrofoam take-out containers, the choices surrounding what we eat have huge global consequences. We need organizations that will turn our food system back into something healthy for our bodies, our fellow human beings, and our planet.
In the spring of 2009, a large group of students, representing a variety of organizations and backgrounds, successfully came together to block a national fast food chain from taking over a Student Union space on the UC Berkeley campus. Out of this opposition grew a desire for an alternative eatery, one that was created for students and by students. This dynamic solution would not simply mitigate negative effects on the world, but also drive positive change in the food system.
Our college campuses are centers of cultural change: young leaders carry the habits that they form here to communities around the world. Thus, it is crucial that colleges encourage positive attitudes and behaviors in their students. However, many campuses desperately lack spaces that foster genuine connections between people, that educate communities about responsible living, and that inspire a global conscience.
